When was the last time you took a look at what you were doing and asked yourself “Why am I doing this?” It could be a particular task or it could be your whole business model.
What was the reason you went into business? Was it to allow yourself greater freedom? Better flexibility to spend time with your kids? Make more money than at a traditional job?
Why are you doing that particular task? Will it increase your exposure for your business? Will it bring you more clients? Will it make your process run smoother?
For me, this summer was a great example of reconnecting with my “why”. 12 years ago I decided to stay home and run my own business so I could have the flexibility of being here when my kids needed me. I also wanted to be able to do something that I enjoy that could bring in supplemental income for our family.
Prior to this summer I’d let my business take priority rather than the other way around. So now that I’ve had time to reflect on that, I’m making a point to scale down the time I work to 3 days/week and only working while they are in school. No more working late in the afternoons or until 1am at night!
I’m setting clear boundaries on my work and personal time to stay inline with my “why”.
How about you?
Your assignment: Review what you are working on to be sure it is still connected with or moving your towards your big “Why”. If it isn’t and you’ve gotten side-tracked, you’ll be able to readjust and get back on path. Do what works, and get rid of anything that isn’t helping you achieve your “why”. 🙂
